Whatnot seller fees explained

Commission, payment processing, shipping and returns — where each fee lands and how to model it per item.

Whatnot seller fees explained

The two fees on every sale

Almost every live sale carries two deductions: a platform commission calculated as a percentage of the winning bid, and payment processing, which is usually a percentage plus a fixed amount per transaction.

Because processing has a fixed component, low-priced items are hit hardest in percentage terms. A one dollar item can lose a large share of its value to the fixed portion alone, which is why cheap filler lots often look profitable and are not.

Shipping is a fee decision, not a shipping decision

Whether the buyer pays shipping, you absorb it, or it is bundled into a combined order, shipping changes the margin on the item. Model it explicitly per order and allocate it across the items in that order.

Combined orders are where most sellers lose track. If four items ship together, the shipping cost belongs across all four in proportion to their value or weight, not on one line.

Returns, cancellations and unpaid wins

An unpaid win or a cancelled order should not stay in your revenue. Reverse the sale so the cost of goods returns to inventory and the item is available to sell again.

Returns cost more than the refund. You lose the outbound shipping, the packaging and the handling time. Treat a returned item as a loss of those costs even when the goods come back sellable.

Giveaways and promotional items

Giveaways have zero revenue and full cost. Log them so the cost of goods is captured and margin reflects reality, rather than deleting them and quietly overstating profit for the show.

Modelling fees before you buy

Before committing to a lot, work backwards: expected selling price, minus commission and processing, minus shipping, minus packaging, minus allocated operating cost. What is left is the most you can pay per piece and still hit your target margin.
